My View on the Post-graduate Craze

Every year, million of college students will sit in for the post-graduate entrance examination. More and more students have regarded the pursuing of a master degree as an indispensable part of their education.

What is to account for their enthusiasm for a post-graduate diploma? First, it is the demand of the time. In an age of knowledge updating and information explosion, what you have learned in college can hardly meet the demand of society. Talents of high quality who are equipped with the latest knowledge and skill will be needed more than ever. That is why many students will further their studies.

Second, we all recognize that the more education you have, the more likely you are to succeed. Compared with those without a master degree, masters will enjoy more preferential treatment, for example, better salaries, more opportunities for promotion and training. A post-graduate degree can guarantee a more promising career.Last but not least, with the graduation of a large number of college students, competition for jobs becomes more and more fierce. One way to gain some advantage over others is to have a higher degree.

No wonder millions of students will consider pursuing a post-graduate degree.

3.Drunken Driving

1.醉酒驾车增多的原因

2.醉酒驾车的危害

3.如何减少醉酒驾车

Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that drunken driving has been a grave problem with which we are confronted. Generally speaking, there are several reasons accounting for /behind this phenomenon. Firstly, recent decades have witnessed the rapid development of people’s living standards. As a result, cars gained ever-increasing popularity and have found their way into our everyday life. Secondly, people participate in more activities or banquets than ever before, where they will drink liquor/strong wine. Then, they may get drunk but continue to drive.

Drunken driving is bound to generate severe consequence if we keep turning a blind eye to it. Firs and foremost, this behavior will directly threaten the safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians/goers, resulting in traffic accidents, injuries and even deaths. Besides, treating the injured and repairing broken cars mean a grievous waste of money, time and resources. Last but not least, this irresponsible driving will make the road a nightmare, and thus, it will causes serious losses of faith in governments and the society.

In view of the seriousness of this problem, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. First, it is essential that the supervisory role of laws and regulations should be strengthened to punish those performing drunken driving. Secondly, the public, especially drivers, should enhance their awareness of public safety. With stringent laws and alert public, it will only a matter of time for drunken driving to become things of past.

Driving after drinking

One of the leading factors in traffic accidents can be attributed to driving after drinking.

Many of the traffic accidents caused by driving after drinking have led to deaths and auto/vehicle damages and even group deaths and injuries. As the saying goes, “alcohol to a driver, misfortunes to the family.”

The tragedies caused by driving after drinking have occurred time and again, but still some people risk their lives. In consequence, the number of tragedies is on the increase.

It is suggested/advised that law enforcement and fines be enhanced and patrol be increased at accidents-prone spots. It is often said that most traffic accidents are caused by overtaking/over-speeding. Therefore, we should follow the rule that we’d rather be late than overtake/rush. Worrying about time, acting aggressively and seeking thrills feature overtaking.

Not only can overtaking make it harder to avoid collision, but also make it even more severe and possible. The higher the speed is, the harder it is to maneuver. In case of an emergency, it is difficult to control the speed and directions.

It is suggested that high technological means be more widely used/applied such as video cameras to target overtaking drivers. Lack of sleep/Sleep inefficiency is a major factor of drowsy driving. A driver who sleeps only for 4.5 hours and continues driving for more than ten hours is most prone to accidents. Lack of sleep may lead to frequent yawning while driving, and rubbing eyes. Therefore, the importance of sufficient sleep can not be over-emphasized.

4.How to prevent the H1N1 virus on campus

It is reported that there are several imported cases of the H1N1 virus in China, which has quickly spread all over the country. According to the information given by the WHO, the H1N1 virus will be more rampant in winter. Now people all over the country are trying to prevent this virus by various means.

How to prevent this virus from affecting us students on campus deserves much attention and discussion. Some people suggest that students should wear masks so that bacteria will not easily affect us. Others propose that students should take some medicine and have their temperatures checked every day.

As for my own part, if we want to prevent this or that kind of disease from infecting us, we have to start the prevention with our very own. We should take some measures such as taking a vacillation injection so that we will be immune to this disease. Also, we have to pay special attention to our own hygiene. We can let in some fresh air every morning so as to refresh the dormitory rooms. Let’s try every way to create a clean and tidy environment for all of us.

5. Effects of Financial Crisis on College Students

1.金融危机给各行各业都造成了一定影响

2.金融危机对大学生造成何种影响

3.作为大学生,应怎样应对这种影响

Since the financial crisis swept the world, the global economy has sunk into a severe recession. It's hard to get through a day without hearing or reading news about the devastating effects of the crisis: A world of companies go bankrupt, millions of employees are laid off, high-return investment bubbles burst, and huge sums of loans can never be retrieved. Its impact on our daily life can be felt in all walks of life.

College students inevitably fall victim to this pervasive slump as well. On top of that, internships and job vacancies are reduced to the minimum as companies keep shrinking. New graduates find themselves hard to get a job, not to speak of a satisfactory one. What comes next? Poor students will be hard-pressed if they find student loans unavailable any more. As a result, some even cannot afford to continue their studies. Lastly, more students are probably out there anxiously looking for part-time jobs now that they have to help cover their expenses in this gloomy economy. Their innocence and eagerness might be taken advantage of by some malicious businesspeople, or even criminal gang.

In response to these threats, we students must act promptly and wisely. Since we definitely will be facing a competitive job market, it's crucial that we submit high quality resumes. Therefore, we must commit more to our professional studies. Even do better, master more relevant job skills as a double security. Furthermore, apply for scholarships and grants, as these are still available and we don't have to pay them back. As for the safety issues, trust our instinct - there's no free lunch in this world. Anything that promises quick returns without much work is a sure trap. Stay alert and protect ourselves.

Craze for Civil Service Examinations

Every year hundreds of thousands of people in China take civil service exams conducted at various levels in the hope of becoming government employees. Among them, college graduates are a fast-growing force that can't be ignored. The craze for being a civil servant is not limited to liberal arts majors, as it's also gaining popularity among science and engineering students.

In the final analysis, this growing trend among the youngsters is mainly attributable to two factors - ambitions and comforts. On the one hand, many ambitious college graduates view these exams as a springboard to a higher social status, greater power and prestige, on which many of their other wishes rest. On the other, as being a civil servant generally means a stable income, enviable healthcare and pension programs, as well as other comforts of life, it's quite an appealing career option to many people, especially in this age of sluggish world economy.

Personally, the desire to be a government official is beyond reproach, as the nation and the people do need an injection of new blood into the civil service sectors. The fresh-faced college graduates, armed with lofty ideals, new vision, and strong drive, are undoubtedly among the best candidates.

7. The rise of house prices affecting the life of people

With the society further advancing and the living standards of people significant improving, people in ever-increasing numbers are planning to buy better or larger houses. However, here comes a problem: the rising prices of houses. How are we going to solve this problem?

People’s attitudes towards this issue vary widely from person to person. Some people believe that the price of houses should not be very high because the ordinary people can not afford high-priced houses. Others hold the idea that the price of houses should be raised in order to keep more people, especially those wealthy ones from buying more houses.

With the advance of our society and further improvement of cities, more people will move to new houses as their old houses should be pulled down to be replaced by new ones. However, the majority of people are civilians, and the government should provide more economically-affordable houses for them. Only when more civilians can live in the economically-affordable houses will the society become more harmonious and more secure.

8. What is your opinion of the Post 90’ generation?

At the moment, the post-90’ generation is often a topic touched upon by media and it seems that this generation of people are totally different from those of the 80’s, the 70’s or even the 60’s. In what ways are they different?

People’s attitudes towards this issue vary widely from person to person. Some people believe that the post-90’s generation has a lot of strengths. These people are usually full of vitality, warm-hearted, creative and ready to help. These strengths can be easily seen in the Wenchuan earthquake. A lot of young people offer help to the people in the earthquake-hit areas. On the other hand, the post-90’ generation of people use different ways to make up themselves. For example, their styles of clothes are entirely different from those of the previous generations. They focus on fashion and they seldom consider money problems. If they intend to buy a large item, they won’t hesitate. This is one of their strengths as well as one of their weaknesses. Quite often, we hear people talk about the so-called “moonlight community” which actually should be called “ the hard-to-make-ends-meet community/clan”. Another example is that some of the 90’s generation are spoilt by their parents. As a result, they are not capable of managing their own life. They can hardly know how to deal with the outside world.

There are always two sides to everything, and this topic is no exception. As a person of the 90’s generation, you should learn to mix yourself with the outside world and with the people around you. You can further give full play to your talent and abilities.

9.How to prevent the theft of bicycles on campus

A very big headache facing all students, even school authorities, is the theft of bicycles. Too often we hear our peers talk about the stealing of their bicycles, which has become a commonplace. In what way can we try to do something to prevent it from happening?

People’s attitudes towards this issue vary widely from person to person. Some people suggest that students buy second-hand bicycles at very low prices. Some other people hold the idea that students have to get a very firm padlock for their bicycles.

As far as I am concerned, we should not only take more prevention measures, but also we have to ask the school authorities to take this problem into serious consideration. Furthermore, I think that the government should also stage out some laws and regulations to prohibit the sales of stolen bicycles in the black market.

10. The hard-to-make-ends-meet community 月光族

Nowadays, more and more people, especially young people are joining the army of the moonlight community—the hard-to-make-ends-meet community. These people usually will run out of their earnings without any savings. While many people think that it is a kind of fashion, some other people are strongly opposed to the idea.

Those who are in favor of the idea believe that these young people know how to enjoy life and pursue a higher quality of life style. However, some people criticize the idea. They argue that the way of life enjoyed by this special community is a sheer waste.

After weighing the pros and cons, I prefer the latter one. As for my own part, though the special community may acquire temporary satisfaction from their consumption, in the long run, it is unfavorable to their family life and careers. We should remember an English proverb: one should always prepare for a rainy day.

11. What do you think of celebrities as spokesmen for products?

Nowadays it is not uncommon that many celebrities or movie stars act as spokesmen for products in their advertisements. Those manufacturers are trying to make good use of the idols of the public to attract the attention of their products.

There are many problems connected with those celebrities and the products they represent. Take Sanlu Milk Powder for instance. This kind of food contained some additives which are poisonous and harmful to babies. It is also reported that a famous cross-talker Hou Yao-hua acted as spokesmen for ten products, all of them are classified as problem products. The general public enjoy watching their idols on TV or in movies and they usually believe that these celebrities can be trusted. Unfortunately, some celebrities are cheating their admirers to the extent that their admirers are negatively harmed.

As far as I am concerned, it is not wrong for celebrities to act as spokesmen for any product, but they have to take the responsibility for what they are doing. I hope that legal measures should be established to combat fake or problem products.

12. What is your opinion of the commercialization of campus music or songs?

In recent years, campus musicians or singers have been commercialized. More and more enterprises are interested in being the sponsors of campus musicians or singers. Also, many singers waste a lot of time taking part in various kinds of singing competitions: the Happy Girls Singing Competition is one of them.

Some singers and even their parents or relatives are trying to think of every means to publicize the singers. Some of them even bribe the judges at the competitions. On the scenes of these competitions, some singers perform very poorly, but they won the appreciation of those judges. This situation is very harmful to the healthy development of college students. They begin to learn cheating at a very early age.

In my personal view, college students should learn to be honest, which is the top priority as a human being. While we welcome various kinds of entertainment in our life, we should also be aware of our own conduct.

13. Direction: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic Private SchoolYou should write at least 150 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

1.当前,社会上有很多私立学校和培训学校;

2.私立学校的利与弊

3.你的看法

It can be noticed that a large number of private schools or training organizations become a new landscape in education. When you read newspapers, when you watch TV, when you walk on the road, you will inevitably see lots of advertisements about private schools. There are private schools mainly dealing with foreign languages, computers, music and sports.

However, is it a good or bad thing to have so many private schools? As a coin has two sides, so do the private schools. On the one hand, private schools can meet the special needs of the society or the particular demands of people. On the other hand, they often bring people extra burden because of comparison and competition.

When asked to decide whether we should have a society without private schools or a society with private schools, I will not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. Although attending a training course will result in the extra cost or burden, it is of tremendous merits in preparing my work and cultivating my skills.

14. Direction: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic Self-employment. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

1.大学生自主创业已经很普遍

2.大学生自主创业的好处

3.我的看法

Recently, self-employment has become a popular idea among youngsters, college graduates in particular. Owing to favorable policies, a large number of graduates launch their own business as the starting line of career. Furthermore, some successful examples have already been reported in the newspapers and Internet.

Admittedly, there are several advantages for graduates to become self-employed. Firstly, the current intense competition for jobs can be eased to a large extent. Besides, it is apparent that young people can broaden their horizon in this process. Even if unsuccessful, they can learn from their failure and enrich their experience. Lastly, the hardship in self-employment enables graduates to be more diligent, which will be of tremendous benefits to their career in the society.

As modern college students, not only should we get a good command of professional knowledge, but also make a clear and reasonable plan for our future career. Personally, I intend to establish my own business after graduation. I am convinced that being self-employed can contribute a lot to my personal development.

15. Direction: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic Academic plagiarizing. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

1.当前,有很多学术抄袭现象

2.学术抄袭的危害

3.怎样杜绝学术抄袭

When reading newspaper or surfing the Internet, we are often attracted by the news or reports about academic plagiarizing. It is reported that a large number of researchers copy others’ academic achievements directly and some students cheat when writing their papers.

There are, however, several demerits which we can not turn a blind eye to. First and foremost, it goes without saying that this cheating behavior impairs the protection of intellectual property rights. Secondly, it does great harm to the cultivation of qualified talents. Dishonest graduates can hardly be trusted. Even worse, students who cheat in academics will be punished. For instance, Li Ming, one of my closest friends, was expelled from college and deprived of the bachelor’s degree.

In view of the seriousness of this problem, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. First, it is essential that laws and regulations should be worked out and enforced stringently to prohibit cheating in academics. Second, students and researchers should enhance their awareness of innovation. With these measures taken, it is reasonable for us to believe that the problem will be solved in the near future.

16. Direction: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic Internet-based CET. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

1.有人认为有必要举行网络考试

2.也有人持不同看法

3.我的看法和打算

It is reported that College English Test will be internet-based. Some individuals argue that it is necessary to adopt this new testing system. Firstly, they claim that it is favorable for students to enhance their computer skills, which are of vital importance in modern society. In addition, internet-based test will be more efficient and convenient.

Others, however, hold the opposite opinion. They think this new testing system will result in injustice. On the one hand, a number of students can hardly afford their food and clothes. How can they be as skillful as those from rich families in using computers? On the other hand, CET, in their opinion, should test the examinees’ English proficiency rather than computer skills.

Personally, I am convinced that the new way of testing will contribute a lot to students’ comprehensive abilities. Not only should they get a good command of English, but also master some basic knowledge on computer. Only in this way can they become winners in the future job-hunting. To conclude, I am in favor of this new testing system.
