Sons and Lovers is a 1913 novel by the English writer D. H. Lawrence. The Modern Library placed it ninth on their list of the 100 best novels of the 20th century. 

  David Herbert Lawrence, born in 1885, the British writers in the 20th century, is one of the figures in the 20th century English literature is one of the most important and most controversial writers. The main achievements include novels, poems, plays, essays, travel notes and letters. He wrote poems, but mainly write novels. In March 2, 1930, Laurence died in France. Laurence in the UK is now a museum in the old apartment. Laurence's works too much about pornography, suffered violent attacks and criticism. But he works in order to explore the depths of the human soul, and the successful use of the artistic description, therefore, until he was from so far, his work has been paid attention to the literary world.

  Sons and lovers is one of his representative works. It is Laurence in his childhood and teenage life modeled and written a masterpiece. While the novel initially incited a lukewarm critical reception, along with allegations of obscenity, it is today regarded as a masterpiece by many critics and is often regarded as Lawrence's finest achievement.

  Many people know that this is a classic erotic novel, so it at a distance. In fact, the people for erotic measure, Laurence's creation is actually quite subtle. This work is mainly about the Oedipus complex. But I think the protagonist Paul "Oedipus complex" also may not be worth brought large stresses selling point, it is not a speak between mother and son incest love books, because there is no any emotion is not normal, in this era of such families grow up children can hold how "normal" feelings? Ask Paul and his mother was more like a "normal" mother, which in my opinion is not realistic. So put aside these irrelevant topics it, sons and lovers is a tragedy, it is a painful experience tragedy of the story.

  Sons and lovers is Laurence's autobiographical novel, written very touching. Born relative advantages have good education  Mrs. Morel fell in love with the poor cultural level is low but handsome miners Morel, so hesitate to marry him. Brief honeymoon quickly spent between the two sweetly, the hardships of life and cultural differences, and the different living habits of, the fierce conflict broke out between husband and wife. When children are born, Mrs. Morel give all your love to their children, hoping that they can grow up to rise above the common herd talent, get rid of them as the father of the fate of the workers. She loved his son William, for he pinned especially deep feelings. William not negative expectations, successful inroads into London society, but because the pursuit does not belong to the class of their own to the woman hard rushing to make money in an attempt to get married, and ultimately died in exile. William's death made Morel wife cannot recover after a setback, and the second son of a serious illness made her wake up from the grief of the dead, to face to the living world, because small son Arthur naughty listen to teach, Mrs. Morel simply to all of their attention and expectations shifted to Paul. Paul's love and marriage has become the most concern for the mother. "Sons and lovers" plot line is William's growth in love and death, and Paul and two of his lover Miriam and Clara, as well as the way of Mrs. Morel’s life.  

  But if the sons and lovers understanding triangle for son, mother and lover, this is not accurate. Whether it is William or Paul, their tragic love, the most important reason is not the mother's advice, but they grew up in the era of the family, their tragic natural personality. Mrs. Morel is a small sample of families in transition under the background of the society, but their disastrous family life makes the connotation of the tragedy has been extended and deepened. William's death is, in fact, as a young man from the countryside trying to enter society challenge failed, but he desire to society efforts has been the family support and encouragement, and is also what his mother, Mrs. Morel expect and hope.

  And Paul while leaving home to Nottingham factory, but he still yearning for Miriam behalf of the farms in the country and pious pure spiritual life, Miriam is Paul's soul mate, but he cannot bear mental pressure, Paul to pursue is the unity of spirit and flesh, love and Miriam is too aloof in  ordinary living outside. In Mrs. Morel after the death of Miriam and Paul had the opportunity to get married, but they are ultimately not together. Failure of the parents love for Paul to pain, in his growth process, there is no a successful example of men. He hated his father on the mother's not respect and considerate, but also do not know how to face the woman to love a good man should. Paul is not a man to love, but he will only love for her mother, but not the love of women, he can't tell the difference between two kinds of love. If he really married Miriam, he will be happy?

  Laurence described the life in sons and lovers , is our living, and life is the essence of love, both spiritual love and physical love. The love that Lawrence wrote down is not calm , but such as war like fierce; love is not a simple love, but hate and repeatedly intertwined. Finally I want to say is that whether people regard it as a what kind of work to read, can not forget a life like thin cicada's wings with our minds, is a terrible singing woke up our minds. What is depicted in the book is that the plain of life, and it is this life, like rocks overlay to our body and refined with our body and soul.
